Huge semifinal match-ups in Nedbank Cup

PIC: Baraka Majogoro of Chippa United is challenged by Sphiwe Mahlangu of TS Galaxy

The semifinal line-up in the Nedbank Cup is complete following Chippa United’s 2-0 away win at TS Galaxy on Sunday, something of an upset victory against one of the form teams in the topflight.

The draw was made for the last-4 and the announcement made that the final will be at the Mbombela Stadium on June 1.

Mamelodi Sundowns will travel to Stellenbosch FC in a tasty Nedbank Cup semifinal fixture that pits the top two teams in the league table against one another.

Stellies dumped Sundowns out of the competition at the quarterfinal stage last season and with homeground advantage will be hopeful of a repeat performance. It promises to be an intriguing clash.
Chippa United will host defending champions Orlando Pirates in the second of the semifinals, which on paper looks like a good draw for The Buccaneers considering who they might have faced.

But the last three meetings between the sides have seen a win each and a draw, so it has been quite tight. Chippa’s last home win against Pirates was in 2016, while overall the Soweto giants have 15 wins to four for Chippa in 22 previous clashes.

The Mbombela Stadium will host the final for the second time having been the scene of Pirates’ come-from-behind 3-1 victory over second-tier Black Leopards in the 2011 decider.

It is one of 12 venues used by Nedbank for their showpiece match in the now 17 seasons of the Nedbank Cup since 2008.
Galaxy had the lions’ share of possession in their quarterfinal against Chippa, but the latter put in the masterclass in counterattack football and won the day.

They scored their opener through the big Cameroon forward Bienvenu Eva Nga, who now has two in two games since his return to the club having been set up by the unlikely figure of Justice Chabalala for both.

Chippa scored a second from the penalty-spot as Roscoe Pietersen converted in injury-time to end Galaxy’s hopes. It was his first goal since September 2022 and just the second he has scored in over three years.

He has been a loyal servant to the club since he joined in 2021 and one of their key players again this campaign in the heart of the defence.
